Ministry of Industry: Collaboration Strengthens Muslim Fashion Industry to Conquer the Global Market

The Ministry of Industry continues to encourage various parties to work together to accelerate the development of the Muslim fashion (modest fashion) industry in Indonesia. Moreover, the Muslim fashion industry
in the country has been growing in recent years in line with opportunities at national and global levels.

“The development of the modest fashion industry depends on the role of many parties. We therefore invite all stakeholders—associations, the textile industry, businesses, designers, academics, influencers, marketplaces,
and consumers—to help build a sustainable and competitive Muslim fashion industry,” the Director General of Small, Medium and Miscellaneous Industries (IKMA) at Kemenperin, Reni Yanita, said in a written statement in Jakarta on Tuesday (25/2).

The Director General of IKMA said her side appreciates the various programs and activities supporting the advancement of the modest fashion industry in Indonesia, including the Muslim Fashion Festival (Muffest) 2025. The event was successfully held on 20–23 February 2025 in Jakarta with the theme “Connecting in Style”.

Reni said the Muslim apparel industry is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years, in line with the growth of the Islamic economy market worldwide. The State of the Global Islamic Economy
2023–2024 report released by DinarStandard states that Muslim consumer spending on six commodity sectors could reach USD 3.1 trillion in 2027.

“This spending grows by 4.8 percent over five years, compared with 2022, when it reached only USD 2.29 trillion. The six Islamic economy commodity sectors expected to grow rapidly are food, fashion, media and recreation, travel, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics,” she said.

Furthermore, according to Reni, the Muslim fashion sector ranks second highest. “In addition, global Muslim fashion consumption is also predicted to grow, reaching USD 428 billion in 2027,” she said.

Consumption of halal goods and services in Indonesia in 2025 is projected to reach USD 330.5 billion, with apparel products ranking second among products consumed in Indonesia's sharia market.

“With the current market opportunities and development of the Muslim fashion
industry, we must be optimistic about maximizing our hold on the domestic market and increasing our competitiveness in global markets. We can explore the countries with the largest Muslim fashion consumption, such as Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Egypt, as potential export destinations,” Reni said.

In addition, to strengthen the domestic Muslim fashion industry's ability to break into export markets, Reni invited all Muslim fashion businesses to develop their products so they can compete in local and global markets, and to partner with the domestic apparel industry. The domestic apparel industry has great potential as a production partner, including the small and medium industry (SMI) sector.

“Given that the apparel industry employs 2.7 million workers across 569,000 businesses, according to the 2022 Micro and Small Industry Profile and the 2022 Indonesian Manufacturing Industry Statistics, this will help the local modest fashion industry become master in its own home,” she added.

To make the modest fashion industry ecosystem in Indonesia increasingly solid, Kemenperin is therefore consistently running a series of programs, such as HR competence development, product quality development, halal certification facilitation, machinery and equipment assistance, education units and fashion incubation program centers, and providing access to promotion and exhibitions for fashion
industry players in general.
