The Textile and Textile Products (TPT) industry plays a strategic role in national development. Its competitiveness is supported by an industrial structure integrated from upstream to downstream, and it is increasingly competitive with high domestic and export demand. The TPT industry also employed 3.65 million people as of August 2021.
The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has made the TPT industry a development priority in the Making Indonesia 4.0 Roadmap. Developing the TPT industry through Industry 4.0 aims to increase domestic textile competitiveness using technology able to produce clothing textiles and textiles for more specific needs
“Historically, Indonesia's modern textile industry began with the founding of Textiel Inrichting Bandoeng (TIB) in 1922, meaning it reaches a century, or 100 years, in 2022. TIB is the forerunner of Kemenperin's industrial service institution, the Center for Textile Industrial Standardization and Services, also in Bandung, which also gave rise to Indonesia's oldest textile vocational school, now Politeknik STTT Bandung,” Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita explained in Jakarta on Thursday (14/7).
The Minister said the 100-year journey of Indonesia's TPT industry is a moment to keep improving the sector's performance. At a mature age, the TPT industry is expected to keep developing through innovation in new application areas and new manufacturing methods. It also faces environmental issues that encourage the circular economy through the concept of sustainable textile and fashion.
Kemenperin continues to improve TPT industry competitiveness through various efforts. In 2022, it continued the machinery price discount incentive program. So far, 10 TPT companies have used the program through Price Discount Reimbursement Agreements (P4H). For 2022, Kemenperin is focusing machinery purchase incentives on fabric finishing and fabric printing industries, and on machinery/equipment with 4.0 technology such as artificial intelligence, the internet of things, augmented/virtual reality, advanced robotics, 3D printing and machine-to-machine communication. “This is so TPT companies can use more modern, efficient, energy-saving and environmentally friendly machinery and equipment,” the Minister explained.
To support TPT competitiveness, Kemenperin contributes to creating trained and competent industrial human resources, including through vocational education. Starting from weaving courses sought after by pioneers of the weaving industry from across the archipelago, Politeknik STTT Bandung is now a vocational school preparing excellent, competent industrial human resources in textiles. “Over its journey, Politeknik STTT Bandung has become a Centre of Excellence in textile science and technology. It is also a digital satellite of the Indonesia Digital Industry Center (PIDI) 4.0, which will be an Industry 4.0 showcase in textiles and a research center for Industry 4.0 development,” the Minister explained.
Kemenperin also has the Center for Textile Industrial Standardization and Services, known as Balai Besar Tekstil (BBT), in Bandung, which has played a strategic role from the start in assuring textile raw material quality, industrial extension and textile technology development. BBT is a partner of the TPT industry, currently accelerating the transformation of new services meeting current industry needs: a green industry certification body, a testing laboratory for medical masks and respirators, a halal inspection body, and the Industrial Service & Solution Center (ISSC), which brings industry closer to Kemenperin policy information through integrated access such as TKDN Self-Assessment and INDI 4.0 Self-Assessment, and offers TPT process technology testbed facilities for TPT product development. “With the tagline one stop solution for textile industries, the ISSC is expected to become a solution center for stakeholders' problems and strengthen connections among all parties to jointly advance Indonesian textiles,” the Minister continued.
A Century of Indonesian Textiles: Event Series
To mark 100 years of the TPT industry, Kemenperin has prepared several events, including the 4th Indonesian Textile Conference 2022, a Business Gathering, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Textile and Textile Products Industry Development, the Indonesia Textile Summit 2022, a Fashion Show in cooperation with the Islamic Fashion Institute Bandung, and closing with a Fun Run & Textile Festival. The peak of the commemoration will take place from 28 to 31 July 2022, attended by the Minister of Industry and Kemenperin officials, provincial and city/regency heads, associations, university representatives and others.
The 4th Indonesian Textile Conference 2022 is an international conference discussing three main issues: the future of textiles, sustainable textiles and clothing, and Industry 4.0 technology, with speakers who are practitioners and academics from abroad. It is held alongside the Business Gathering 2022 for BBT's 100 Years of Service, attended in hybrid form by BBT stakeholders and industrial service users as a forum for exchanging information on services and the latest government policies in the TPT sector.
The Indonesia Textile Summit 2022 consists of a Talk Show, the Launch of the Indonesian Textile Ecosystem, the Launch of a video on 100 years of textile education, Textile Awards honoring people who have made major contributions to national textile development, and the presentation of mandatory SPPT-SNI certificates to TPT industries.
“Through the 100 Years of the Textile Industry commemoration, Kemenperin seeks to foster the spirit of advancing the archipelago's textile industry so it is known worldwide,” the Minister concluded.
