Ministry of Industry Forges Fashion and Craft SMIs to Break into Global Markets

The Ministry of Industry continues to encourage the growth and development of the domestic fashion and craft industry so that it contributes more to the national economy through various strategic programs and policies. Moreover, Indonesian fashion and craft products are already in high demand in international markets because they are unique, innovative and follow current trends.

One concrete form of Kemenperin's support for developing the fashion and craft industry, especially for small and medium industries (SMIs), is the collaboration between the Fashion and Craft Industry Empowerment Center (BPIFK) and the Indonesian Indigenous Entrepreneurs Association (HIPPI) of Denpasar City, which held “Rupa Karsa Bali 2025” at the end of June. The event symbolizes cooperation to increase competitiveness and expand market access for fashion and craft SMIs, especially in Bali.

“The collaboration aims to build a fashion and craft industry ecosystem that is more inclusive, innovative and ready to compete in global markets,” said the Director General of Small, Medium and Miscellaneous Industries (IKMA) at Kemenperin, Reni Yanita, in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday (7/8).

The Director General of IKMA stressed that her team is committed not only to encouraging sustainable SMI growth, but also to helping SMIs move up a class so they can penetrate international markets. “The collaboration with HIPPI Denpasar City is a real example of synergy that can open wider access for SMI players, especially in fashion and craft, in terms of markets, innovation and improved product quality,” she said.

On that occasion, a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) was also signed between BPIFK and HIPPI Denpasar City on “Empowering the Fashion and Craft Industry through Creative Collaboration”. The scope of cooperation covers three main pillars: facilitating technical guidance, outreach and assistance; developing product innovation and increasing creativity; and providing market information, promotion, product marketing and partnerships for fashion and craft SMIs.

The Director General of IKMA also explained that Rupa Karsa Bali was designed as an integrative platform combining education, promotion and collaboration. Seven SMIs supported by BPIFK showcased their best work in a fashion show, together with models from the Jegeg Bagus Kampus pageant of the National Education University (Undiknas) Denpasar. The seven SMIs are Theacastor, Anacaraka, Kominela, Waiki Textile, Lului, Seminyak Leather Bali and Wira's Silver Bali.

“This event is not only a showcase for SMIs' work, but also a stage that brings SMI players together with market networks, designers and creative communities. This synergy must continue to be expanded to strengthen Indonesia's creative industry as a whole,” she said.

Rupa Karsa Bali also featured talk shows on current issues in the fashion and craft sector, including “The Role of Entrepreneurs in a Sustainable Fashion and Craft Industry” with HIPPI Bali Province and the Director of Diana Group, “Digital Strategy and SMI Collaboration Today” by AUM Bali, and “Diverse Wastra, Diverse Styles: Bringing Local Wisdom into Everyday Wear” with Agung Bali Collection.

“We hope events like Rupa Karsa Bali will not only be a celebration, but also spark the continuity of development programs, increased production capacity and the opening of wider markets for regional SMIs,” Reni said.

The Head of BPIFK, Dickie Sulistya Aprilyanto, said Bali has great potential as a center for fashion and craft products deeply rooted in local culture yet globally relevant. “Through the collaboration with HIPPI Denpasar City, we want to create a healthy space for SMI players to grow, strengthen human resource capacity and encourage innovative products that reflect Indonesian identity while spurring product innovations relevant to national and international market trends,” he explained.

The synergy between BPIFK and HIPPI Denpasar City in events such as Rupa Karsa Bali is a joint effort to build an inclusive and excellent national fashion and craft industry ecosystem, involving all stakeholders for sustainable creative economy growth.

Meanwhile, the Chair of HIPPI Bali Province and Rector of the National Education University (Undiknas), Dr. A.A.A. Ngurah Tini Rusmini Gorda, said the cooperation is expected to spark new enthusiasm among Bali SMIs to expand their market share.

“This synergy brings together local strengths with the right business development strategies, so that Bali SMI products can penetrate export markets and strengthen Indonesia's cultural image in the eyes of the world,” Tini said.
