The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) continues to encourage manufacturers in Indonesia to apply green industry principles in their production processes. The aim of green industry is to prioritize efficiency and effectiveness that can align industrial development with the preservation of environmental functions.
“Green industry brings many benefits, including reducing operating costs through energy and water savings, conserving limited natural resources, reducing negative environmental impacts, maintaining ecosystem balance and encouraging the development of environmentally friendly technology,” the Head of the Agency for Industrial Standardization and Services Policy (BSKJI), Andi Rizaldi, said in a statement received in Jakarta on Saturday (2/3).
The Head of BSKJI stressed that, to regulate the use of energy resources, the government has issued Government Regulation Number 33 of 2023 on Energy Conservation. “The main purpose of the regulation is to ensure sustainable national energy availability by applying energy-efficient technology, using energy efficiently and rationally, and promoting an energy-saving culture,” he said.
In line with implementing Government Regulation 33/2023, Kemenperin supports the Boosting Energy Efficiency Practices for the Industrial Sector (BENEFITS) project, which aims to strengthen energy management in industry on a larger scale to accelerate industrial decarbonization and the energy transition.
“The project is managed by the Indonesian Institute for Energy Economics (IIEE) with government partner Kemenperin's Center for Green Industry and supporting partner ViriyaENB,” Andi explained. The main target is to build Energy Management Systems in five industries, reaching at least 70–80% readiness for ISO 50001 (by the third year).
The project also provides Energy Manager and Energy Auditor training (Awareness Level Seminar) for 25 parent companies. BENEFITS also offers technical assistance on Energy Management Systems (EnMS) in industry, for industries consuming 4,000 TOE/year or more.
“The project also encourages industry to understand internal audits and basic energy management, so that once companies are financially established they can apply and continue implementing energy management systems in the future,” he added.
The Executive Director of the Indonesian Institute for Energy Economics (IIEE), Didi Hasan Putra, said the main BENEFITS activities include awareness-level training for 25 industries, Training of Trainers (TOT) on energy audits for 24 Technical Implementation Units (UPT) at Kemenperin, and a preliminary study of the Energy Consumption Index (IKE) in five selected industries.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Center for Green Industry at Kemenperin, Apit Pria Nugraha, said the BENEFITS project is in line with industrial decarbonization and national energy conservation policies. It is expected to help increase industrial efficiency and competitiveness.
“It is also meant to raise awareness of applying green industry standards and support the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in industry, contributing to net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060—or, for the industrial sector specifically, accelerated to 2050,” he said.
