Industrial estates are no longer judged solely on the completeness of their infrastructure or the ease of investment. The global business world increasingly demands industrial estates that are energy-efficient, low-emission, able to manage waste sustainably and that apply a circular economy. In response to this change, the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has inaugurated the Eco-Industrial Park Center (EIP Center) at the Indonesia Digital Industry Center (PIDI) 4.0 Building in Jakarta as a hub for the transformation of green industrial estates in Indonesia.
Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the establishment of the EIP Center is one of the priority programs in the implementation of Indonesia's Global Eco-Industrial Parks Programme II (GEIPP II), a collaboration between Kemenperin and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) supported by the Government of Switzerland through the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
“We express our appreciation to the Government of Switzerland through SECO and to UNIDO for their support in establishing the EIP Center, which we hope will become a center of excellence to facilitate the transformation of industrial estates into Green Industrial Estates,” the Minister of Industry said in a statement in Jakarta (28/7).
The government is also strengthening industrial estate regulations so that the transformation toward green industrial estates can proceed faster and in a more targeted way. One of the measures being prepared is to require every industrial estate to draw up a transformation roadmap toward becoming a Green Industrial Estate. Industrial estates that meet the standard will receive various fiscal facilities and special conveniences as an incentive to accelerate the green industry transformation in Indonesia.
The EIP Center will be a support hub for industrial estate managers in drawing up transformation roadmaps, providing technical consultation and training, and developing green industrial estate pilot projects. It will also strengthen the application of industrial decarbonization, the circular economy, industrial symbiosis and various sustainable industrial development practices.
To support its operations, Kemenperin formed an EIP Center Technical Team involving Kemenperin, the UNIDO Representative for Indonesia and Timor-Leste, and the Indonesian Industrial Estates Association (HKI). The team will run various strategic programs, from providing consultation services, training and transformation roadmaps to identifying pilot industrial estates, strengthening policy and fostering collaboration among stakeholders.
Kemenperin's Director General of Resilience, Regional Development and International Industrial Access (KPAII), Tri Supondy, said the success of the green industrial estate transformation requires close synergy between government, the business community, industrial estate managers, regional governments, associations, universities and development partners.
“The synergy between the Ministry of Industry, UNIDO, industrial estate managers, the business community, regional governments and all stakeholders must continue to be strengthened. I hope the EIP Center will not only be a center of knowledge, innovation and collaboration, but also a catalyst for accelerating the transformation of Indonesia's industrial estates into sustainable and globally competitive eco-industrial parks,” Tri said in his remarks at the inauguration of the EIP Center at the PIDI 4.0 Building in Jakarta.
The EIP Center is located in the Ministry of Industry's PIDI 4.0 Building and covers an area of around 367.3 square meters. The facility consists of office and consultation rooms, a technical team room, and a showcase area, reception and waiting room designed to support various activities assisting the green industrial estate transformation.
On the same occasion, the UNIDO Representative for Indonesia, the Philippines and Timor-Leste, Marco Kamiya, said the establishment of the EIP Center shows Indonesia's strong commitment to integrating industrial growth with environmental sustainability. “The EIP Center is not just a physical facility, but a national platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing, innovation and capacity building in developing Eco-Industrial Parks,” he said.
The Swiss Ambassador to Indonesia, Timor-Leste and ASEAN, Olivier Zehnder, added that through the implementation of GEIPP supported by the Government of Switzerland, Indonesia has become one of the leading countries in applying the green industrial estate concept. “Indonesia's experience has provided valuable lessons for the global community on how sustainable industrial transformation can go hand in hand with economic growth,” he said.
UNIDO also expressed its commitment to continue supporting the development of green industrial estates in Indonesia through improved resource efficiency, the application of the circular economy, climate action and strengthened industrial competitiveness.
The EIP Center is expected to be the starting point for accelerating the transformation of industrial estates in various regions into estates that are more efficient, low-emission and sustainable. Through collaboration between government, the business community and international partners, the transformation is expected to attract more green investment while strengthening Indonesia's position as one of the world's competitive manufacturing centers.
