To build a framework for strengthening exchange and cooperation in industry, the Government of Indonesia agreed to cooperate with the Government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Government of the Republic of Korea. The cooperation is expected to promote effective exchange and cooperation in industry.
The Indonesia–PRC industrial cooperation agreement was signed by Indonesian Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita and PRC Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) Jin Zhuanglong. The Indonesia–Republic of Korea industrial cooperation agreement was signed by the Minister of Industry and the Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, represented by Trade Minister Ahn Dukgeun. The Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) were signed during the Indonesian President's bilateral meetings with the PRC Premier and the President of the Republic of Korea, part of the 43rd ASEAN Summit on 5–7 September 2023.
“The industrial cooperation MoU between Kemenperin and the PRC's MIIT aims to develop cooperation in the manufacturing sector for a period of 5 years, which can be extended,” the Minister said after signing the MoU at the State Palace on Friday (8/9).
The cooperation covers in particular policy and regulation, aircraft raw materials, solar photovoltaics, electronic components, household appliances, shipbuilding, small and medium industries, and industrial estates.
The Minister explained that activities under the cooperation include promoting mutually beneficial cooperation projects, intensifying industrial human resource development programs through capacity building, education, training, academic research and knowledge sharing, and promoting exchange and cooperation between research centers, think tanks and consultancies, and between industry and educational institutions under the authority of both countries.
Furthermore, regarding industrial estates, the cooperation will encourage technical assistance for industrial symbiosis among tenants within estates, and assistance in applying standards in technology and the environment. It will also promote projects aimed at fostering industrial development in both countries, as well as other forms of cooperation agreed in writing by the Parties.
The scope of industrial cooperation agreed between Indonesia and South Korea includes industrial policy to analyze bilateral cooperation in response to industrial developments, enhancing bilateral cooperation to expand investment in the industrial sector and industrial estates, and holding joint projects to develop future investment in the industrial sector.
In technology, the cooperation includes exchanging information on new technology developments and market trends in the industrial sector, developing and applying technological innovation to increase industrial productivity and competitiveness, and exploring and implementing joint technical projects to improve industrial performance.
In industrial human resource development, cooperation will be carried out to build the capacity of industrial human resources in manufacturing technology development and Industry 4.0, and to conduct research to develop industrial human resource capacity. Cooperation will also be carried out in other areas jointly determined by the participants.
“South Korea is one of Indonesia's main trading partners. Investment from South Korea has also grown in line with President Joko Widodo's policy direction on transforming toward industrial downstreaming. Investment is dominated by leather goods and footwear, motor vehicles, electronics, basic metals, and chemicals and pharmaceuticals,” the Minister explained.
He hopes cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea can keep growing and that both sides remain committed to driving economic growth, especially in the manufacturing sector of both countries. “We believe relations and friendship between the two countries can grow even closer, especially in partnership and collaboration in manufacturing, to increase sustainable economic growth for each country,” the Minister concluded.
